- In a “new to them” scam that’s been around for more than a year, the ‘hitman email’ has arrived in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Unsuspecting individuals receive an email stating that there’s a contract out on their life, but their assassination can be bought off for a certain amount of money.
- With John R. Ledwidge announcing his retirement on March 30 after 11 years as CEO, St. Anne’s CU of Fall River, Massachusetts has appointed Ross R. Upton to the position. Upton, Chief Financial Officer at St. Anne’s for 15 years, was elected at a special meeting of the credit union Board of Directors.
- With the first quarter completed, merger statistics have been updated by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). In all, 43 credit union mergers have been completed in 2008, including one corporate credit union. Hit hardest was the state of Alabama, which has lost 5 credit unions in 2008.
Robbed:
- Arizona FCU, Tucson, Arizona, Thursday. Waving a silver handgun, he ordered members and staff to the ground before taking an undisclosed amount of cash. No one was injured.
- Animas CU, Farmington, New Mexico, Thursday. No details available other than no one was injured, there may be a female accomplice, and the getaway car was a blue compact.
- Fort Bragg Mutual CU, Spring Lake, North Carolina, Thursday. Three men, armed with pistols, took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled in two vehicles. No one was injured.
Arrested, Arraigned, Charged, or Sentenced:
- And convicted. 23 year old Floridian Kenneth Lee McFann faces up to 60 years in prison for robbing three financial institutions, including GTEFCU in August of last year. A knife was displayed, but never used, in all three robberies. He will be sentenced on June 18.
